Michael John was born on January 26, 1971 in Louisville, Kentucky, and was singing and playing music very soon after birth. Piano and guitar studies started at age 6, with formal trumpet instruction beginning at age 10.

Michael John's earliest musical influences were his father's whistling, and the beautiful voices of his mother and "Grams". His first, and perhaps favorite instrument, was an oatmeal box his mother lovingly taped and decorated as a drum...complete with a strap!   Childhood musical influences were the bluegrass, gospel and revival sounds of churches that Michael's father pastored.  Cherished musical memories include listening to his mother and father's collection of vinyl; children's educational, classical symphonies and orchestras, and recordings of the 50's and 60's. Chamber music, church choirs, brass bands, and high school marching bands often took center stage, and Michael John frequently served as trumpeter or vocalist. Teenage ears enjoyed the radio and culture of Kentucky; bluegrass, country, easy-listening, folk and rock from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, pop, metal, alternative, and industrial rock of the 80's and 90's. After graduating high school, college and classic radio and the jazz festival remained sonically dominant.

Current influences include jazz and blues, bluegrass and folk, gypsy, Latin, swing, bebop, avant-garde, world rhythms, tribal drum gatherings, sacred ritual chanting, kirtan, ecstatic dance, electronic dance music, and the art and music of artists and community.

Residing in the mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, Michael John continues to study trumpet, composition, piano, native flutes, percussion, and voice with a variety of instructors and masters of various genre.
